The man who shot and killed his former fiancée, a pharmacist and a police officer at Mercy Hospital in Chicago on Monday (November 19) reportedly demanding that his ex return him his wedding ring before his deadly shooting rampage.

Juan Lopez shot Dr. Tamara O’Neal repeatedly in the hospital’s parking lot prior to fatally shooting 25-year-old pharmacy resident Dayna Less and 28-year-old Chicago cop Samuel Jimenez.

According to WGNTV, Lopez demanded Dr. O’Neal give him the ring back he gave her, then shot her three times when she told him she didn’t have it.

Lopez and O’Neal were reportedly supposed to have gotten married three weeks ago, however, O’Neal called off the engagement in September. Lopez was shot and killed by SWAT officers during a shootout at the end of the incident.

O’Neal reported for work just before 3:30 p.m. when she was confronted by Lopez. Chicago Police Department Superintendent Eddie Johnson says a third person, who knew at least one of the two, subsequently attempted to intervene.

Johnson then says, “At that time, the male individual lifted up his shirt and displayed a handgun.” The acquaintance then ran inside the hospital and 911 was summoned. After the call came in, that’s when shots began firing. Witness James Gray saw Lopez and O'Neal talking in the parking lot and the gun being drawn.

Officer Jimenez responded to an officer’s assistance call and was one of multiple officers who ran toward the gunfire. According to Johnson, Jimenez wasn’t even assigned to the call but responded anyway.

The second woman was shot as she got off an elevator and reportedly had nothing to do with the tragic incident.
