Georgia School District Under Fire For Labeling Black Haircuts ‘Inappropriate’
Signs posted inside a DeKalb, Georgia elementary school have gone viral over their content, which depicts different Black hairstyles with some deemed “appropriate haircuts” and “inappropriate haircuts” for both boys and girls.
The Facebook user, named Danay Helena, who posted the photo of the sign captioned the post with, “Wowzers....so that’s how y’all feel Dekalb County Schools?...Hair is a form of self-expression, shouldn’t be a right or wrong way..”
Among the hairstyles deemed “inappropriate” for boys were mohawks and ones with designs etched into the hair. Girls wearing braided hair is apparently unacceptable.
The image has been shared more than nearly 4,000 thousand times and prompted a response from district officials. “The images depicted in this post in no way reflect a (DeKalb County School District) policy regarding appearance,” officials said in a statement. “This was a miscommunication at the school level and is being handled by school leadership. Nontraditional schools at (the DeKalb County School District) sometimes have the option to enforce dress code and style standards.”
Regardless, many on social media are blasting the school district, saying they are denying a child’s self-expression and also pointing out the signs did not include any white people.
