A young woman from Arlington, FL, was shot inside her apartment three days before she was set to give birth to her first child.
Iyana McGraw was 19. Her child survived.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, McGraw was found shot inside an apartment on Justina Road near Justina Road Elementary School around 8 p.m. on Monday (October 7), News4Jax reports.
A friend who did not want to be identified told First Coast News she was speaking with McGraw hours before the shooting.
“Baby girl Milan, she had the room set up and everything,” the friend said.
According to her family, she shared the apartment with her boyfriend. However, the police have not named any suspects in the case.
McGraw was nine months pregnant at the time she was shot and was later pronounced dead at an area hospital. The Sheriff’s Office later confirmed that her child, a baby girl, survived, News4Jax reports.
“This girl has been taken away from her baby that she never got to meet,” Gloria McGraw, the young woman’s aunt, told News4Jax. “Three more days, and she would have met her child.”
She was also looking forward to attending college in January. Her aunt said she received a scholarship offer from Spelman College in Atlanta, according to First Coast News.
“She wanted to be a pediatrician, and she had the brains to do it,” Gloria said.
While the family says there is more to this story, they did not want to share anything that would compromise the investigation, News4Jax reports.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who knew Iyana or saw what happened to come forward by calling 904-630-5000 or emailing email@example.com. An anonymous tip can be made to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-866-845-TIPS.
Gloria told News4Jax, “She was so excited. She was filled with so much joy, something to live for.”
