The girlfriend, Reiko Troupe, 25, was taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder after the girl, Trenay, reportedly had been dead for four days.
Trenay’s father, Jeffrey Duchane Jr., 34, was arrested Saturday for suspicion of child abuse and failure to protect. Duchane first told police he discovered his daughter’s body Saturday in his apartment. But police say he knew his daughter had been dead since at least Tuesday, and still went about his daily business.
“Incredibly, we believe that he was around and in and out of the apartment and living there during the week,” Sgt. Andy Hill, spokesman for the Phoenix Police, Department, told the Republic.
On Saturday, police discovered Trenay’s tortured, burned body in a bedroom and found her nine-year-old sister hiding in the bathtub, the newspaper reports.
The motive for the alleged attack is unknown.
After being taken into custody and questioned, police say Duchane and Troupe gave officers conflicting accounts of what happened and implicated each other.
Police contacted Trenay’s mother but gave no information on where she might be. Hill also stated that Child Protective Services may have had contact with the family previously.
“This family has had a lot of issues,” he told the newspaper.
Trenay’s younger sister is in the hospital with serious burns and a broken bone, suffered while trying to protect her older sibling, police said.
New charges could be on the way, according to the police.
