News| Duke Rape Case | Two Duke Lacrosse Players Arrested for Rape

Posted April 18, 2006 – Two members of Duke University's lacrosse team were arrested Tuesday on charges they kidnapped and raped a stripper they hired for a party.

The early morning arrests came a month after a 27-year-old Black woman and mother of two told police that she was gang-raped March 13 by three White men in the bathroom of an off-campus house.

The woman, an exotic dancer who attends nearby North Carolina Central University, says that she and another dancer had been hired by the team. The alleged victim said the men called her racial slurs as they assaulted her.

Bond for the two 20-year-old college sophomores, Reade Seligmann and Collin Finnerty, was set at $400,000.  Seligmann posted the bond, and Finnerty is in the process of doing the same, which means the two will avoid a first court appearance Tuesday.

An arraignment is expected in the coming days.

The racially charged allegations have led to near daily rallies, the cancellation of the team's season and the resignation of the lacrosse coach.

Duke University school officials said Monday that the coach was warned last year that his players had too many violations of the campus judicial code and he needed to "get them in line," The Associated Press reported.
