Music Icon Ike Turner Dies

Published February 11, 2008

Updated December 13, 2007 -- Ike Turner, rock singer Tina Turner’s infamous ex-husband, died Wednesday in San Marcos, Calif.

He was 76.

"He was definitely a funk visionary," said music writer and cultural critic Greg Tate.  “[You can compare him to] Puffy, Quest Love and Jimi (Hendrix) rolled up into one cat; This cat was in the business before anyone knew there were rules. Not many folks can jump into an emerging market and know what they are doing.”

No official cause of death has been announced but, which first reported his death, says he might have died in his sleep.

Turner is remembered more as a drug-addicted, abusive husband – as he was memorialized in the 1993 film “What’s Love Got to Do With It” - than a talented guitarist, singer and hit-maker.

This year, Turner, born Izear Luster Turner, won a GRAMMY in the traditional blues album category for his work “Risin With the Blues.”
