UPDATED Feb. 15, 2007 – An ex-Ohio cop, who told jurors how he accidentally killed his pregnant girlfriend earlier this week, was convicted of their murders Friday.

As the judge read the verdict, Bobby Cutts Jr., reportedly sat still with his chin up and had no reaction, The Associated Press reports.  Cutts was found guilty of aggravated murder in the death of the nearly full-term fetus and of the lesser charge of murder in the death of Davis.  He was also convicted of abuse of a corpse, buglary and child endangering.

In a tearful, two-hour testimony Monday afternoon, Cutts told a stunned jury how he killed Jessie Davis with a blow to the throat  last June, before loading her body on the back of his pickup and dumping it in a local park.

The  30-year-old former cop, who is Black, explained to the all-White jury that he and 26-year-old Davis got into a heated argument when he went to pick up his 2-year-old son from Davis’ home.  As he was about to leave, he testified, Davis grabbed him and he snatched away from her, accidentally hitting her in the throat with his elbow and knocking her out.

“I didn't kill anyone," the former Canton patrolman said, his voice breaking.
"She hit the ground....she fell pretty hard. I didn’t meant to hurt her,” he said, adding that he tried to perform CPR and even tried using bleach as a smelling salt to revive her.

Cutts said that when he realized Davis was dead, he wrapped up her up in a comforter and placed her in the bed of his truck because he didn't want his son to see her dead body.  He testified that he then called an old friend, Myisha Ferrell, for help.

"I just did it.... I was like, how in the hell am I going to explain this," Cutts testified.

Thousands of people searched for Davis when she disappeared last June. Cutts met with authorities nine times before finally leading them to the park where he dumped her.

Prosecutors argue that Cutts was starting to feel the pressure of a rocky marriage, financial debt and supporting several children.

Assistant prosecutor Dennis Barr Dennis Barr told the jury that Cutts' long, meandering testimony made absolutely no sense and that he intentionally killed Davis so he wouldn't have to pay child support.

"He knew when he was suffocating Jessie, when he was strangling Jessie, he was killing that baby inside her," Barr said.

Cutts Jr., faces the death penalty.
