Posted March 11, 2008 – The Rev. Thomas W. Weeks III heads into an Atlanta courtroom today to face charges that he choked, beat and stomped his famous televangelist wife, Prophetess Juanita Bynum.

Weeks has maintained that he never abused his wife of five years, and he has even contended that he was the battered spouse. What occurred in the parking lot of Atlanta ’s Renaissance Concourse Hotel on Aug. 21 is not what it seemed, Weeks’ attorneys say.

"It is not true, said Ed Garland, Weeks' defense attorney. "That is part of their effort to create a case where there is not a case," Garland said. "The truth is that he did not assault his wife, that she was totally emotionally and physically out of control and assaulted him first. His only actions were in self- defense. He is absolutely innocent."

But Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard said it will be difficult for Weeks to convince a jury that he did not beat his wife, when a bellman pulled Weeks off Bynum and heard Weeks threaten to kill her.

"We plan to present evidence of what happened by way of eyewitnesses," Howard said.

The official charges are aggravated assault, terroristic threats and simple battery.

Together, the couple ran Global Destiny Church in Duluth , Ga. , a booming ministry of several thousand members.
