William Balfour went from person of interest to prime suspect Monday when police arrested him in connection with the Oct. 24 shooting deaths of the “Dreamgirls” star's relatives.
Chicago Police detectives went to the Illinois ' Stateville Correctional Center, where Balfour has been held since two days after the murders, to make the arrests, according to E! Online. The 27-year-old is awaiting formal charges, a police spokesman said.
Defense attorney Joshua Kutnick told reporters outside the police station that his client says he's innocent of the brutal slayings.
Hudson 's mother, Darnell Donerson, and 29-year-old brother, Jason Hudson, were found shot to death in the family's Chicago home last month. Her nephew, Julian King, the 7-year-old son of Hudson 's sister, Julia, went missing after the shooting and was found dead three days later in an abandoned SUV from a gunshot wound to the head. Hudson was called upon to identify the bodies of all three relatives.
Police almost immediately picked up Balfour as a "person of interest" in the case, but he was jailed on unrelated charges of parole violation stemming from an attempted murder charge for which he did time until 2006. The Illinois Prisoner Review Board decided to keep him locked up after hearing evidence that he appeared in places where drugs were sold, E! Online reported.
