One-hundred-fourteen-year-old Gertrude Baines, an African-American daughter of former slaves, is now the world’s oldest woman, according to Guinness World Records.
Now a Los Angeles resident, Baines was born to former slaves in a small town near Atlanta in 1894. In an interview with the L.A. Times last week, Baines expressed her joy with being able to witness the election of Barack Obama, saying, "he's for the colored people. I'm glad we're getting a colored man in there," she said. She also told the Times she spends most of her time "doing nothing but eating and sleeping."
So how did she stay so healthy for so many years? "God. Ask him. I took good care of myself, the way he wanted me to," Baines told CNN two years ago.
