The Obamas Surprise D.C. Students

Published February 4, 2009

President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle surprised a group of Washington, D.C. public school students with a visit Tuesday. The duo made the trip on a particularly rough day, when the resignation of President Obama’s cabinet pick, Tom Daschle, dominated headlines.

“We were just tired of being in the White House,” Obama joked to a group of second-graders at Capital City Public Charter School.

But Obama showed no signs of stress while spending time at the school fielding questions from the seven-year-olds. When probed, Obama revealed that his favorite superheroes are Spiderman and Batman. When one student asked the first couple what it was like to live in the White House, the First Lady shared that their new home had a movie theater, bowling alley and a candy shop.

The Obamas also read to the students, posed for a class photo, and dropped off bags of books to the school. The First Family is making good on a promise to become active members of the D.C. community, despite the demands of the presidency.
