Police Chief of Historically Black College is Arrested

Published March 11, 2009

The police chief of historically Black Morehouse College in Atlanta has been indicted on charges that he held a deer hunter captive.

The Lamar County, Ga., grand jury found that Police Chief Vernon Worthy falsely imprisoned the man, saying he believed the man was trespassing. He also faces charges of aggravated assault and pointing a gun at another person, Lamar County Superior Court Deputy Clerk Lesley Kilchriss told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Although Worthy was not arrested in the incident last November, his accuser, Nathaniel Rooks, filed an application for a criminal warrant. Worthy’s attorney argued at the time that the hunting incident was a misunderstanding.
