The Philadelphia-area woman accused of starving to death her 14-year-old daughter three years ago will spend the next 20 to 40 years behind bars, a judge ruled Wednesday.
Authorities found Danieal Kelly’s body in a funky, sweltering third-floor apartment in the south New Jersey neighborhood of Mantua. The girl’s body had a maggot-infested bedsore that was so deep that her hip bone was exposed, authorities said.
Danieal had suffered from cerebral palsy and was confined to a wheelchair.
For her part in this tragic act of “brutal indifference,” as the prosecutor described it, Danieal’s mother, Andrea Kelly, will be confined to a prison cell.
"I do accept part of my daughter's death," said Kelly before the sentence was meted out. "I wish I could have done more to save her."
