A mother is dead after trying to teach her 13-year-old son how to drive.
Police say Janie Mae Hampton and her son were in the parking lot of a Spartanburg, S.C., apartment complex Monday night when the tragic incident occurred.
Authorities believe that 40-year-old Hampton was trying to teach her son how to park the car and was behind the vehicle when it was moving in reverse. Several media outlets report that the car eventually slammed into Hampton and pinned her between her car and another parked car.
The victim’s brother, Johnny Hampton, told WSPA-TV in Spartanburg that when the boy saw his mother pinned between the two cars, “He got out of the car and was saying, ‘Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom,’ asking what’s going on.”
The victim’s sister Barbara is trying to console the teen.
“I tell him everything’s gonna be alright. Accidents happen. He still blames himself for what happened,” Barbara Hampton told the station.
Janie Mae Hampton was pronounced dead at an area hospital. The son was not injured.
Police said it is illegal for a 13-year-old to drive a car. One must be 15 years old and pass a written test before getting a learner’s permit.
Spartanburg Public Safety officials say no charges are expected. They are treating the incident as accidental.
