The father of First Lady Michelle Obama is among those buried at a historic Chicago cemetery where police say hundreds of bodies were dug up by graveyard workers and dumped to re-sell the plots.
So far, there is no indication that the grave of Fraser Robinson III was among those disturbed.
"I can confirm the First Lady's father is buried at Burr Oak cemetery," Michelle Obama’s spokeswoman, Camille Johnston, wrote in an e-mail to NBC affiliate WMAQ-TV in Chicago. "We will have no additional comment on this matter."
Three former gravediggers and a former cemetery manager have each been charged in the alleged scheme. They allegedly made about $300,000 in reselling plots. The historic Black cemetery, where many famous African Americans are buried, has been declared a crime scene and closed to the public.
On Tuesday, officers began looking for disturbed graves to determine if the right bodies are buried in the right plots, WFLD-TV in Chicago reports. The Cook County Sheriff's Office says it has received more than 7,000 written inquiries about people buried at the cemetery.
Robinson died in 1991 from complications from multiple sclerosis.
