Obama's Aunt: The President Was Born In Hawaii

Published August 14, 2009

President Barack Obama's aunt says he was born in Hawaii and she can't understand claims that he's not a natural-born American citizen.

Zeituni Onyango says in an interview with WKYC-TV in Cleveland the president's late mother didn't give birth in Kenya.

Some Americans known as birthers claim Obama was born outside the United States and is ineligible to be president.

Onyango is the half-sister of Obama's late father. She has been living illegally in the U.S. and is fighting deportation. She had been staying with relatives in Cleveland but moved to Boston in December. It's unclear where she lives now.

She declined to discuss her Feb. 4 immigration hearing in Boston.

A spokesman for her lawyer in Cleveland had no comment on the interview Thursday.
