President Obama to Appear in “Get Schooled” Documentary

Published August 19, 2009

President Barack Obama is set to be featured on the documentary, “Get Schooled: You Have the Right,” along with NBA star LeBron James and singer Kelly Clarkson, Viacom and the Gates Foundation announced.

The special will air commercial-free on BET and across other Viacom networks Sept. 8 at 8 p.m., and will highlight the inspirational stories of close colleagues of the trio who overcame their obstacles to gain premier positions in the worlds of politics, sports and entertainment.

Those profiled include Obama’s speechwriter Sarah Hurwitz, Clarkson’s music director Jason Halbert and Latesha Williams, who works as an Assistant Account Director for LRMR with James. “What Sarah, Jason and Latesha’s stories teach us is that education is the key to living out your dreams,” the president said during the documentary.

“I urge you to set goals for your own education: to study hard and get involved in your school, to try new things and find something you’re passionate about. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and ask for help when you need it. That’s how you learn. That’s how you get ahead. And that’s how our nation will get ahead – by ensuring that every American gets a world-class education, from preschool to college to a career. So get schooled. Your future – and our nation’s future – depend on it.”

Viacom and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation co-developed “Get Schooled,” which is a five-year national initiative dedicated to pushing people from all walks of life (businessmen and women, policymakers, community leaders, children, etc.) to find solutions for the problems facing the nation’s school system.
