SC judge rejecting Susan Smith's appeal

COLUMBIA, S.C. – A judge is giving Susan Smith less than three weeks to come up with better reasons for why she deserves a new trial after she was convicted in 1995 of killing her two sons in South Carolina.

Smith filed a handwritten appeal earlier this year saying she should get a new trial in part because she suffered abuse from her now ex-husband, David Smith. He hasn't returned several messages, but one of the prosecutors who tried Susan Smith said their investigation showed no signs of any abuse by him.

Smith was sentenced to life in prison for leaving 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alex strapped in their car seats as she rolled her car into a lake. She initially claimed a black man carjacked her and drove off with the children.
