KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The NAACP honored Academy Award-nominated actress Cicely Tyson as it wrapped up its annual convention in Kansas City.

Singer Toni Braxton performed Thursday night when the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People gave Tyson its Spingarn Award for distinguished achievement. Tyson starred in "Sounder" and "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman."

The convention started Saturday, and highlights have included the passage of a resolution condemning racism within the tea party movement. Tea party organizers quickly disputed its claims of racism and asked the NAACP to withdraw the resolution.

The event also featured appearances by first lady Michelle Obama and the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.
