Oakland Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain is free on a $2,000 bond, but his problems could be just beginning after he was arrested Thursday on misdemeanor assault and firearm charges in his hometown of Decatur, Ala.
McClain is accused of putting a gun next to the head of a man he was having an altercation with on Wednesday. According to the Decatur police, the man begged McClain not to shoot. McClain then pointed the gun away from his head but allegedly fired a round next to the man’s ear. No one was shot, but the man is claiming injury from the altercation.
According to the Associated Press, McClain, 22, faces charges of assault, menacing, reckless endangerment and firing a gun inside of city limits. McClain, through his attorney Billy C. Burney II, denies shooting a gun or being involved in any altercation. McClain reportedly was in Alabama to attend the funeral of his grandfather.
"Mr. McClain asserts his innocence," Burney said in a statement. "We are confident that Mr. McClain will be cleared of all charges."
But McClain may have trouble convincing the Raiders and the NFL of that, especially with photos circulating that show him smiling as he was being arrested by police.
McClain, who has come into his own this season as the Raiders second-leading tackler, could be in some trouble when he returns to Oakland. The Raiders have had no comment so far, but McClain is now listed as questionable for the Raiders game at Miami on Sunday following his arrest.
