Greek Federation Calls "Chimpanzee" Remark of Antetokounmpo Unacceptable

The Greek basketball federation called an extremist political party leader's slurs against Giannis Antetokounmpo "unacceptable."

The Greek basketball federation spoke out against an extremist leader Thursday who called NBA draft pick Giannis Antetokounmpo a "chimpanzee."

The federation says the comments of Nikolaos Michaloliakos, leader of the far-right Golden Dawn party, in a television interview on Tuesday were "unacceptable and racist."

The hate speech came after Antetokounmpo was recognized for his accomplishments by the Prime Minister of Greece, Antonis Samaras, who told the player, "all of Greece is so excited for you."

Antetokounmpo, 18, is the son of Nigerian immigrants. He was selected in the first round of the draft by the Milwaukee Bucks this year.

The Golden Dawn party has been labeled "neo-Nazis" by the prime minister for openly admiring Adolf Hitler and denying that the Holocaust occurred, according to the Associated Press.
