A knife-wielding man attacked Brittney Griner in China on Monday, giving the WNBA star a cut on her elbow. She wasn't hospitalized and is OK.
According to ESPN, the incident happened when Griner and her teammates were headed from the practice facility to board the team bus. The man approached Griner and slashed her through her winter coat, attempting to do the same to one of her teammates, but not being able to. Griner didn't need stitches nor a visit to the hospital, walking away relatively unscathed.
"First let me say I'm ok!!!!" Griner took to her Instagram account Tuesday to tell her fans. "But last night me and 3 my teammates got chase and attack by a man with a big ass knife got a little scratch and my teammates walk away unharmed! He chase us into our bus and had us cornered yelling at us then he finally left! Ugh lets just say I'm ready to get out this city we are visiting! Life can be took at any moment! Cherish every moment! AGAIN IM OK! Thank you to everyone that has been checking on me!"
That Instagram caption was accompanied by a video of police officers surrounding the man. Griner captured the video from the team bus after the deranged individual walked off of it.
In an email to the Associated Press, Griner wrote: "I was thinking I was going to end up stabbed in China and if he got to us at the back of the bus, I was going to have to fight this man with a knife. The guy was clearly either mentally ill or very drunk. He was yelling about us hitting his wife and it was pretty clear he had no idea who we were."
The 6-foot-8 center for the WNBA champion Phoenix Mercury is currently playing in China.
