It has been nearly 48 hours since boxer Andre Dirrell's uncle, Leon Lawson Jr., stormed into the ring and sucker punched his nephew's opponent, Jose Uzcategui, after their fight had abruptly ended Saturday night in Maryland. And people still can't believe what they witnessed.
The bizarre scene took place after Uzcategui knocked Dirrell down with a huge left hand after the eighth-round bell sounded. Since the punch came after the round ended and Dirrell couldn't continue the fight, Dirrell earned the vacant interim super middleweight championship via disqualification.
But the late hit didn't sit well with Lawson, who took it upon himself to enter the ring after the bout ended and sucker-punch Uzcategui. Despite Dirrell apologizing on behalf of his uncle, Maryland's Prince George's County Police slapped two counts of assault against Lawson. As of this morning, police were still searching for Lawson, who will be arrested when found. According to The Sun, Lawson could face a max sentence of 25 years in prison if found guilty of the first-degree assault.
Needless to say, the shocking events took Twitter by storm, as people continue to weigh in.
Good lord almighty!
Sounds like it's just a matter of time.
Hard to argue with 'em. His shots sent Uzcategui to the trauma center at MedSTAR Washington Hospital in Washington, D.C., before he was released after further evaluation, as reported by ESPN.
That first punch landed was more than a chin check. Ouch!
How is it that the hardest punch landed came illegally after the fight?
#Facts or nah?
