The Los Angeles Lakers want to see what Lonzo Ball is all about — without any involvement from his outspoken dad.
That could explain why the Lakers won't allow LaVar Ball at Lonzo's highly anticipated workout with the team today.
Lakers coach Luke Walton confirmed that news while appearing on the Jim Rome Show yesterday, adding that the controversial hoops dad could join them for dinner before, though.
"Absolutely. If he wanted to come to the dinner. I think the workout is something that we'll keep the doors closed on. But the dinner, I think he would definitely make the dinner more entertaining," Walton said, as reported by USA Today Sports. "He's definitely welcomed to join us for that one."
Walton also reiterated that LaVar's controversial personality isn't a concern for him nor the Lakers organization.
“We’re in the NBA. To me, that’s not an issue," Walton continued. "Parents are always gonna have their opinions. They’re gonna be outspoken at times. As you know, Jim, I have a very outspoken father myself. It doesn’t bother me."
The Lakers are expected to tab Lonzo, a 6-foot-6 guard out of UCLA, with the second overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft on June 22.
"If we were to draft him, we’re gonna coach him," Walton added. "He’s gonna be part of our team. He’s gonna be part of our family. And we’ll go from there. This is the NBA. We’ll keep the team where it needs to be. We’ll not let outside things like that influence us on whether or not we pick the kid.”
LaVar can't be mad about not being able to attend Lonzo's workout. It's not the norm for parents to attend these workouts, anyway. More importantly, do you think Lonzo will show and prove his hoops skills to the Lakers today?
