J.J. Watt's Harvey Fund Relief Has Surpassed The $27 Million Mark

Thanks in part to a $5 million donation from an owner of a Texas supermarket chain.

Update: J.J. Watt's fund relief for tropical storm Harvey continues to amaze.

A day after announcing that the fund has raised over $20 million, the Houston Texans' star defensive end took to his Twitter account yesterday to declare that fundraising efforts have crossed the $27 million mark.

The big jump could be largely attributed to a generous $5 million donation from Charles Butt, the CEO behind the San Antonio-based H-E-B supermarket chain.

Keep up the good work, J.J.!

Previously: For anybody who subscribes to the old mentality of telling athletes to "stick to sports," consider this: If J.J. Watt stuck to sports, he wouldn't have been able to help spearhead over $20 million in fundraising relief for Houston residents rocked by tropical storm Harvey.

The Houston Texans' star defensive end took to his Twitter account yesterday to announce that fundraising has surpassed the $20 million mark, marveling how much it has overwhelmed his expectations of the fund's initial goal of $200,000 just last Sunday.

"Every single day since then has been a reminder of how much good there is out there in the world," Watt said. "When times are tough and things look bleak, people step up to help their fellow human."

Take a look at Watt's full video message below.

After Watt made the announcement, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon made a $1 million donation to his fund.

Just this past Monday, when the fund had just crossed the $18 million mark, Watt shared details about how the money will be spent.

“Phase two is what's going to happen with all of the money,” Watt said via his Twitter account. “Not a single dollar has been spent yet. All 10 semi-trucks were donated ... so we haven't even spent a single cent yet and that's a testament to the community.”

The fundraising efforts of J.J. Watt, Kevin Hart and Trae Tha Truth and many others should be applauded. Salute!
