Colin Kaepernick has already been referred to as a modern-day Muhammad Ali after kneeling during the entire 2016 NFL season as a protest against racism and the police brutality of unarmed Black men.
And now the free-agent quarterback is the recipient of an award bearing the late boxing legend and beloved global sports icon's name.
On Thursday, Sports Illustrated announced Kaepernick as the recipient of its prestigious 2017 Muhammad Ali Legacy Award.
The eloquent piece, which is penned by writer Michael Rosenberg in the link above, begins with one of Ali's many memorable quotes — "If I was walking down the highway with a quarter in my pocket and a briefcase full of truth, I’d be so happy" — before delving into Kaepernick's fight for social justice.
And Kaepernick's girlfriend, Hot 97 on-air personality Nessa Diab, couldn't be prouder, posting this beautiful, loving message for the woke QB below.
As part of Thursday's announcement, Ali's widow, Lonnie Ali, also showered Kaepernick with high praises.
“I am proud to be able to present this to Colin for his passionate defense of social justice and civil rights for all people,” Lonnie Ali said as reported by Sports Illustrated. “Like Muhammad, Colin is a man who stands on his convictions with confidence and courage, undaunted by the personal sacrifices he has had to make to have his message heard. And he has used his celebrity and philanthropy to the benefit of some of our most vulnerable community members.”
Yes, he has! Just over two weeks ago, GQ also named Kaep its "2017 Citizen of the Year" for his contributions.
We just love Nessa's post and congratulations to Colin Kaepernick!
