Serena Got Hit With A $17K Penalty For Standing Up For Herself And Against Sexism and Racism
Serena Williams has reportedly been fined $17,000 for three violations during the U.S. Open women’s final.
Williams lost to Naomi Osaka 6-2. 6-4 in the U.S. Open final. Toward the end of the match she was hit with the multiple code violations, including a game penalty for verbal abuse. Now she’s receiving financial fines: $10,000 for “verbal abuse,” $4,000 for being warned for coaching and $3,000 for breaking her racket.
The money will be taken out of the $1.85 million prize money she received for being the runner up. She was going for her 24th Grand Slam title. During her back-and-forth with ump Carlos Ramos, Williams remarked, “You will never, ever, ever be on another court of mine as long as you live,” she said. “You are the liar. When are you going to give me my apology? You owe me an apology. Say it. Say you’re sorry. And you stole a point from me. You’re a thief, too.”
Social media was up-in-arms about the whole thing
Many believe that it's the U.S. Open that owes an apology to Williams who was essentially accused of cheating and then was punished for defending herself.
First it was the catsuit ban and now this? SMH.
