Shaquille O'Neal’s son Shareef O’Neal was in good spirits after undergoing heart surgery on Thursday.
The UCLA freshman revealed he’d be out for the entire basketball season after team doctors discovered a heart ailment. Over the summer, the four-star recruit was required to wear a heart monitor during practice so he could press a button and alert doctors if he “felt funny.”
One day at practice, he pressed the button and doctors ran several tests, which revealed the ailment.
After his surgery, O'Neal, through a transcriber, posted a message to Instagram.
“I made it,Thank you for all the love and support! I really appreciate all your thoughts and prayers, that’s what helped me through this surgery. I’m on the road to recovery, and I’ll be back soon...better than ever.
His Words, typed by @mimioneal_.”
Before his surgery, the Bruins' freshman said he hopes to be back on the court next season.
O’Neal, who quickly became a star in his own right during his high school days, initially committed to Arizona but later on switched to UCLA after the Wildcats coach Sean Miller was tied to a pay-for-play arrangement involving Deandre Ayton.
