You have to love sports fans. Well, this particular fan.
In the early hours of Monday morning (September 23rd) a fire broke out at an apartment building in Philadelphia.
There were flames shooting out of the second floor of the building and smoke was everywhere.
Firefighters and first responders were on the scene helping residents get out of the building, but it quickly became apparent the windows were the only means of escape.
Hakim Laws, a resident of the building and former firefighter lent a hand, and helped get people from the building to safety.
In an interview with CBS 3 Philly, Laws said:
“An ex-co worker of mine saw the trucks and grabbed the ladders and we set it up and people started coming down.”
There was a resident in the building, Nadir Darby, who also sounded the alarm and got his family and others up and out of the window.
“I looked out my window, I just see a bunch of smoke coming from below… like shooting up,” Darby said. “I woke everybody up. My kid went to the door to try to get out and smoke rushed up the steps so the only way out was through the window. Once they got the ladders up it was only a matter of getting everyone out.”
According to officials, 10 people were displaced, two people were taken to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and one person was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Where the story takes off and goes viral is in the extended comments from Laws about the rescue of the people from the building.
Laws said, “My man just starts throwing babies from the window. We was catching 'em ... unlike [Nelson] Agholor.”
The reference of course is to Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Nelson Agholor, who had a fumble and two key drops during the Eagles loss to the Lions on Sunday (September 22nd). The memory was clearly still very fresh in Laws’ mind.
Agholor heard about the the local hero’s viral moment and offered tickets to Laws and his family for the next Eagles home game.
Only sports, and only in Philadelphia.
