Patrick Day passed away on Wednesday (Oct. 16) after suffering a traumatic brain injury during a boxing match on Saturday (Oct. 12). Day was 27.

During the USBA super welterweight title bout, Charles Conwell defeated Day when he knocked him out in the 10th round. Day exited the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois on a stretcher, according to BBC, to undergo emergency brain surgery. Sadly, the New York native never regained consciousness after slipping into a coma. 

Boxing promoter Lou DiBella confirmed Day’s death on Wednesday sharing a statement online. 

“He was surrounded by his family, close friends and members of his boxing team, including his mentor, friend and trainer Joe Higgins," wrote DiBella. "On behalf of Patrick's family, team, and those closest to him, we are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury."

DiBella described Day as a "good friend to many" in the statement, describing how “Pat's kindness, positivity, and generosity of spirit made a lasting impression with everyone he met."

Conwell shared an emotional Instagram post on Monday (Oct. 14) dedicated to Day, who was still in a coma at the time, writing how he “never meant for this to happen to you. All I ever wanted to do was win. If I could take it all back I would no one deserves for this to happen to them.” The Olympic boxer has not posted again on Instagram since the news of Day’s passing was announced. 

In 2017, Day won the World Boxing Council's Continental Americas championship and the International Boxing Federation Intercontinental championship earlier this year. 

BBC reports Day won 17 out of his 22 fights with one draw.
