There is a trend among this year’s freshman class in college football. Many of them share names with famous late 90s and early 2000’s rappers.

Ok, not many. Just four.

Still, that’s quite a coincidence, considering these aren’t your garden variety names. Then again, what rapper’s name is ordinary?

Play-by-Play voice for Georgia Tech, Andy Demetra, brought this up on Twitter recently and there were a lot of reactions.

Jadakiss Harvey is a freshman wide receiver for the Benedict College Tigers. Named after, maybe one of the more underrated rappers ever? Top five dead or alive, if you hear him tell it.

Mase Funa is a freshman linebacker for the Oregon Ducks. His “namesake,” Ma$e, rose to prominence in the late 90s as a member of Sean Combs’ Bad Boy record label.

Mase, the linebacker, laughed at the tweet pointing out the naming trend.

  2. Cam’Ron Kelly is a freshman defensive back for the North Carolina Tar Heels. Who looks to be named after Harlem’s own Dipset rapper Cameron Giles

Cam’Ron, the defensive back, got in on the fun by re-tweeting these Cam’ron, the rapper, gifs.

  3. Mystikal McGhee is a freshman wide receiver for the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs. He shares a name with  the New Orleans “Shake Ya Ass” rapper and re-tweeted about the trend as well.

  4. Twitter users, always down for jokes, got theirs off.

  5. But one user asked, what will the names of college football players in the 2030’s be? A bunch of Aubrey’s and Kanye’s…?

  6. Naming your kid after your favorite artist isn’t exactly a new trend, but Twitter users don’t despair it doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon.
