Black Girls Rock! 2017 | Don't Touch My Hair
Solange Knowles amplified a global conversation among women of color with her record "Don't Touch My Hair," which celebrates the beauty of textured hair while exclaiming the violation of personal space that natural hair spawns from curious onlookers, namely nonblack people who insist on copping a feel. This series incites a conversation with au natural women, who talk about what rockin' natural hair means to them and the inevitable tales of unpermitted hands in their tresses. We explore issues of Black women on the street, online, and at work - as "don't touch my hair" is a metaphor for "don't violate".
