The Founders of The Roots Crew!
The Roots Crew was founded back in 1987 by Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter and Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, bringing something new to the Philadelphia music scene.
Things Fall Apart
The crew had their breakthrough with the album Things Fall Apart back in 1999, which is named after the novel by Chinua Achebe. The album ended up making it to No. 4 on the Billboard charts.
Dice Raw Leaves The Group
After Dice decided to leave, The Roots, he went on to start his own indie label Raw Life Records, where he released his solo project The Greatest Rapper Never. He also signed prominent battle rapper Rone, who released an album under Raw Life Records titled The First Story.
Phrenology
Phrenology marked a new era for The Roots, with several members of the group, including Malik B., leaving.
Game Theory
The Roots got political back in 2006 with the release of Game Theory. Black Thought described this album as being very reflective of the political landscape of the country at the time.
How I Got Over
The Roots' How I Get Over was the exhale we were all looking for. The album reflected the relief that we felt as we left the George W. Bush era and ushered in the Obama presidency.
The Roots Gave Us A Movie Too!
The Roots put some respek on their album with Betty Wright. Back in 2011, they collaborated with the queen of soul on Betty Wright: The Movie.
Undun Marks The Roots 13th Album
The Roots released their 13th album, Undun, via Def Jam Records on December 6, 2011. The album told the story of a semi-fictional character's life.
