Dreamgirls Premiere

An R&B trio from Detroit experiences the pitfalls of fame and fortune as they achieve mainstream success.

Published February 9, 2012

The year is 1962 and mainstream radio has yet to be introduced to the soulful sounds coming out of the Motor City. Enter the Dreamettes — an R&B trio consisting of Effie (Jennifer Hudson), Deena (Beyoncé Knowles) and Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose). After a chance encounter with a Cadillac salesman by the name of Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx), the Dreamettes find themselves with a manager who takes it upon himself to get them linked up as back-up singers with local R&B sensation Jimmy “Thunder” Early (Eddie Murphy).

As the group achieves greater mainstream success, they soon branch off from being back-up singers for Jimmy to starting their own group, but the pitfalls of fame and fortune may be too great for them to overcome together.

Based loosely on the real-life story of Diana Ross and the Supremes, Dreamgirls was originally a Broadway play that was adapted into a film in 2006. Featuring R&B singer Jennifer Hudson’s acting debut, the movie would go on to become both a massive critical and financial success. Tune in on Monday, February 13 at 3P/2C for the premiere of Dreamgirls.
