12 Queens Who Taught Us About The Journey of Motherhood

These queens made motherhood looks easy, fun and rewarding every step of the way.

Published August 24, 2018

These queens are raising royal princes and princesses.

  1. Serena Williams

Serena Williams, one of the most decorated tennis players (winning 23 Grand Slams) and athletes in the world, recently achieved one of her greatest feats - motherhood. As many know, Serena is a fearless competitor in any challenge she faces on the court, but off the court, motherhood has been somewhat of a eye-opening and indescribable experience. Serena has been quoted that the birth of her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian, Jr., was the "best thing that’s happened to me."

But despite a fairly smooth pregnancy, the delivery process was much more complicated. In Serena's early stages of pregnancy, she experienced spotting, which is a fairly normal occurence during the first trimester of pregnancy. And shortly after finding out she was pregnant, Williams went on to win the Australian Open in 2017 at eight weeks pregnant. But once Serena was closer to delivering her precious daughter, she encountered a series of complications, which included a life-threatening pulmonary embolism and hematoma that required multiple surgeries.

Williams spent nearly six weeks bedridden and unable to get up on her own. And although now, Serena is back to her normal strength, she has had difficulty shaking the depression that followed and the feeling that she didn't do enough or she didn't things right.

Serena's candor on the subject of post-partum depression has been an open forum for other women to discuss their issues and trials freely. Mothers all over the world rallied to support Serena, especially when she reached Wimbledon.

Serena said of her Wimbledon match, "I dedicated that to all the moms out there who’ve been through a lot." "Some days, I cry. I’m really sad. I’ve had meltdowns. It’s been a really tough 11 months. If I can do it, you guys can do it too."

Serena has shown mothers everywhere that although motherhood may not always be easy, you can still go out and fulfill your purpose and dreams.

  2. Ciara

If Ciara's love story with Russell Wilson doesn't make you proud and joyous about #BlackLove, get into her undeniable love for her beautiful kids, Future and Sienna.

Ciara's motherhood journey is one of triumph, built on family strength and love. Watching her love life #LevelUp with husband Russell Wilson was more than enough for us to fall for. As Wilson stepped us as a step-father for Baby Future, it was clear the family dynamic was strong. After Wilson and Ciara were married, they received news she was pregnant with their oh-so-cute daughter, Sienna.

The familial bond that the Wilsons have is unstoppable! #FamilyGoals

Even though Beyoncé's only true kids are Blue Ivy, Rumi and Sir, somehow Bey has culturally found herself being a muva and queen to us all! Bey introduced us to her mini-me, Blue Ivy, back in 2012 and the whole world was blessed.

From then on, we would see Bey and Blue spending tons of quality time together on tour, on vacation, and at every exclusive event that you could imagine. The Carter clan grew plus two when the twins Rumi and Sir were born in June 2017.

As we all know, the Carters keep a low profile when it comes to their personal life, so whenever Beyoncé drops photos of her and her kids you can guarantee fans are in full support. We’re officially crowning Beyoncé Mother of the Year, as she has been a muva to us all long before giving birth to her own kids.

In 2011, Beyoncé told Cosmpolitan, "I have so much admiration for women who are mothers, who balance family and work. I see them and I have this word in my head — respect. I also look to learn. I see these women and I think, 'Yes, it can be balanced, it can all work out, I do believe that it's possible to have it all — work, a career, babies. It's all a question of being very organised."

  4. Toya Wright

Another celebrity mom whose mini-me makes just as many headlines as her is Toya Wright (Antonia Johnson), the beloved mother of Reginae Carter (daughter of Lil Wayne).

Toya has dealt with her fair share of struggles, including fibroids, which are noncancerous tumors, which caused her severe cramping and excessive bleeding. Toya did all she could to naturally transform her diet and commit to regular exercise. But with her strong desire to have more children, Toya had to take another route and seek further medical attention.

Post fibroid surgery Toya said, "Now that I have had the surgery my chances of having a healthy full term pregnancy is greater." Not long after, Toya was blessed with baby #2, Reign Beaux Rushing.

We can't wait to see more #mommydaughter pictures on IG!

Jordin Sparks started her motherhood journey recently, with the birth of her son DJ on May 2, 2018. She was "overwhelmed with joy" welcoming her first child into the world! Her pregnancy journey was beautifully documented on Instagram, where she flooded our feeds with cute maternity photos and adorable pregnancy memories that definitely deserve to be featured in a photo album. What Jordin has taught us is that pregnancy is beautiful, fun and most importantly a joyous time in your life that you should cherish with the one(s) that you love.

  6. Massy Arias

Let's be real, Massy Arias is a super mom, like no other! Watching her workout videos is already inspiring enough, but seeing her continue her fitness regimen while pregnant, and stay active with little Indira Sarai strapped to her chest and/or back is real #motivation.

Massy's mom life is what most of us aspire to: healthy eating, regular exercising and quality time with your little one all intertwined. Well Massy, our hats off to you, because we all know it's not easy, but you make it look so fun! #SuperMomOfTheYear

  7. Tia Mowry

Tia does it all; from hair tutorials with her son Cree to baby Cairo's online reveal where she opens up about her post-partum lifestyle. Tia Mowry is definitely an inspirational mommy. On Tia's Facebook page, she inspires moms out there with this uplifting advice, "There is so much pressure to 'bounce back' after having a baby and it can be really hard! I’m here to tell you you’re not alone, it’s not impossible, and it is YOUR journey. Take it one day at a time and listen to your body because it’s all about recovering at your own pace ."

Many women struggle with trying to "bounce back" and be what others call #bodygoals, but Tia reminds us that not everyone has the same post-partum journey and some journeys don't happen overnight. We love and appreciate Tia's realistic perspective, how open she's been with sharing her story and how she plans to reach her goals. #MomInspo

  8. Chrissy Teigen

Chrissy Teigen is making America great again one tweet/IG pic at a time. She is, hands down, one of our favorite celeb moms.

Chrissy's outspoken behavior isn't only directed to the president, but also at tough issues that deserve awareness. Many mothers have been through it, being shamed for publicly breastfeeding their children, but Chrissy is one hundred percent unashamed! She posted a picture of herself on Instagram living her best life, feeding her son Miles and her daughter Luna's baby doll with the hilarious caption, "Luna making me feed her babydoll so I guess I have twins now."

Seeing Chrissy publicly breastfeed is empowering, especially since it is now legal to breastfeed publicly in all 50 states. By the looks of it, Chrissy Teigen seems in full support of the new bill!

  9. Teyana Taylor

This mother-daughter bond is goals! Teyana isn’t just one of the hottest moms out there, she's also one of the sweetest. Her closeness with Junie (Iman Tayla Shumpert Jr.) is exactly what mothers hope for their relationship to be with their little ones. June is her mini-me, traveling with her on tour and accompanying her to her events, and we love to watch their incredible relationship play out on VH1's 'Teyana & Iman.'

Sidebar: Yes, that is Teyana's mom bod, and yes, it is exactly what we want our summer bodies to look like.

The Take Away: Live your best life with your daughter by your side, and make the best of each moment you get to spend together.
