Over the past three days the launch of Beyoncé's new video, "Formation," has snatched edges, made people mad and given her #BeyHive a few slight heart attacks.
Most recently Bey and her team got put on blast for the imagery used in the "Formation" video. Apparently a chunk of the footage was taken from the documentary That B.E.A.T, directed by Chris Black and produced by Abteen Abgheri. The two creatives took to Twitter on a mission to call Bey out for not given them their due credit. However, Beyoncé's rep put out a statement saying: “The documentary footage was used with permission and licensed from the owner of the footage. They were given proper compensation. The footage was provided to us by the filmmaker’s production company. The filmmaker is listed in the credits for additional photography direction. We are thankful that they granted us permission.”
Abgheri then tweeted: "Thanks for the credit @melinamatsoukas and @Beyonce"
We asked MC Dee-1 to weigh in on the representation of New Orleans in the video and he had this to say: "I love the love Beyoncé shows to New Orleans culture in her video. She has obviously been influenced by N.O., and she's letting it be known. I don't look at it as swagger jacking. For some people watching her video, that will be their first time being exposed to New Orleans culture/sound. I'm not mad at that."
