Robin Roberts's Anti-Cancer Plan Includes One Very Surprising Accessory

The host shares some candid tips for survival.

There is no wrong way to deal with the hardships that millions face when battling cancer. Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts, who has been though it not once, but twice, recently spoke with People to discuss how she combated the way the illness threatened not only her life, but her self-esteem.

"There are many times when my body failed me. When I went through my last ailment, I was down to like 115 pounds, didn't have any muscles whatsoever," she says. "I lost my butt, which was really very hard for me as a Black woman, not to have my booty. I had to wear booty pops for awhile there."

While she can laugh about it now, she did say that her battle with myelodysplastic syndrome, or MDS, was no joking matter. "I jokingly say that, but I've always been someone who's athletic, I've always taken a great deal of pride in being as healthy as I can."

She explained that she has changed her diet. "I love pasta, but now I'm eating chickpea pasta because I had to cut to cut back on wheat." She's even had to cut out fried food, lamenting, "I'm Southern, we would fry water if we could, but it's a change and I've accepted it. I know that if I take better care of my physical being, it'll lessen the chances of the cancer returning."

Roberts added that this new approach is her new way of loving her body. "I know for myself, I look at my body differently. When you have been on the brink a couple of times, I make sure that my diet is better. I make sure that I exercise. Those things that I took for granted, I don't take for granted anymore."

Hopefully Robin can be a lesson to all of us to not take our bodies — or booties — for granted.
