When you think of skin care, do you think about your lips?
If you answered “Not really,” you’re not alone. Many of us focus on eye crèmes, zapping our zits or exfoliating our T-zones, but when it comes our pouts, outside of adding a pop of color, we pretty much neglect them — an act that beauty columnist and skincare expert Kristen Noel Crawley wants us to stop doing.
Enter: her KNC Beauty All-Natural Collagen Infused Lip Mask that plumps, hydrates, conditions and moisturizes.
"Your lips are one of the first things that people notice, so you really do need to take care of them," Crawley told BET.com.
And for the mother of two, using all natural ingredients was really important to her.
“I was in Tokyo for a fashion show and I just fell in love with lip masks over there, but after using them I noticed how awful they tasted. And when I looked at what they were made out of, I realized why. They were made with a lot of artificial ingredients,” she said.
“So I saw that there wasn’t an all-natural mask on the market, so with the help of chemist, we worked to create one that contains, glycerin, collagen, prunus creases (bitter cherry) extract, hyaluronic acid, rose flower oil and vitamin E,” Crawley added.
Even better: The mask isn’t tested on animals and it’s a perfect primer for your favorite shade of lipstick or gloss.
So how does it work? Simple: Clean lips, peel off, apply mask, wait 20 minutes, peel off and voila!
Crawley offers this pre-mask tip, “The mask doesn’t exfoliate, so you can use a washcloth to get dead skin off or make a homemade scrub. I like homemade honey and sugar. Once you do that then use the mask.”
After two years of perfecting, the mask, which debuted less than a month ago, has gotten an “overwhelmingly positive” response so far, she says. And this is just the beginning.
“Right now you can only get the masks on our website, but pretty soon we will be expanding into stores!” she exclaims.
And for the beauty stans that want to follow in Crawley’s entrepreneurial footsteps, she offers the following advice:
Be Innovative and Passionate: “It’s important to create something that hasn’t been made or make something that’s better than what’s already out there. Plus, you have to be passionate about your product like I am about lip masks. That passion definitely will show through.”
Do Your Research: I spent a lot of time on the internet doing research about lips masks, how they worked and natural ingredients that would get the job done. That’s how I did everything.
Make Sure That It Works: “Effectiveness is key to your product. Beauty is a different world than fashion, which is based on personal taste. Beauty products must work. These beauty girls are smart and can’t be fooled. If your product doesn’t work, they’ll give you a bad review. And you don’t want that. So before you get there, make sure have your girlfriends and everyone you know test your produce. And make sure you listen to their feedback.”
Great advice. Y’all listening?
