Halima is the first woman to ever compete in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant wearing a burkini, a traditional Muslim swimsuit. She didn’t win, but she did make it into the top 15, hijab and all.
She was born in a Kenyan refugee camp but moved to St. Cloud as a child, where she is now a student at St. Cloud University in Minnesota.
Halima is dismantling stereotypes of Muslim women and beauty with every photoshoot and catwalk she slays. “A lot of people will look at you and will fail to see your beauty because you’re covered up and they’re not used to it. So growing up, I just had to work on my people skills and give people a chance to really know me besides the clothing,” she told Minnesota’s KARE 11 .
She even makes braces look stunning!
