This Black History Month, get familiar with Minnie Riperton (1947-1979), singer and songwriter. Born in Chicago, Riperton was raised in the famous Bronzeville neighborhood, the youngest of 8 children. Riperton's family loved the arts, and she studied music and drama at Chicago's Lincoln Center. She sang in the group, The Gems, as a teen, who provided backup vocals for singers like Vontella Bass and released their own singles, like "I Can't Help Myself" which became a local hit. In 1967, Riperton joined the group the Rotary Connection a rock-soul group founded by Marshall Chess, the son of Chess Records founder, Leonard Chess. The group released 5 albums before Riperton released her debut solo album in 1970. In 1973, she signed to Epic Records and released the critically acclaimed album, "Perfect Angel," which included the smash hit "Lovin' You." Riperton released two more albums under Epic and scored another hit with "Inside My Love." In 1976, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and she served as a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society from 1978-1979, making her one of the first celebrities to publicly discuss her illness. In April 1979, she released her final album, "Minnie," under Capitol Records. She died several months later. Several posthumous albums were released with the help of artists like Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder, and she is one of the most sampled artists by hip hop and R&B artists. Her biggest legacy, besides comedian daughter Maya Rudolph, is her rare 5 octave vocal range, and her ability to sing in the whistle register. #getfamiliar #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #minnieriperton #blacksingers #blacksongstress #chicago #bronzeville #lovinyou #chessrecords #mayarudolph #fiveoctaves #ccphd
