Everything Serena Williams does is amazing, so it's no surprise that her very pregnant, very nude Vanity Fair cover is exactly that. Shot by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz, Williams wears nothing save for a belly chain against a gray background — and the result is visually stunning.
On the heels of an odd, unexpected exchange with another tennis legend, John McEnroe, it's fitting that early in Williams's profile, author Buzz Bissinger writes the following: "Serena is in the heart of every conversation concerning the best athlete of her time. 'If I were a man, then it wouldn’t be any sort of question,' she told me." McEnroe made a claim on NPR this week that if Williams were on the men's circuit, she'd be ranked "like 700." It's astounding that he could make such a claim after Billie Jean King, a female tennis player, handed his ass to him in the infamous "Battle of the Sexes" match. Williams responded with the classiest of clapbacks on Twitter.
In this story, we find out how Williams announced the news of her pregnancy to Ohanian: with six positive pregnancy tests on the night before the Austrailian Open. Their unlikely love story narrates the piece: she, the greatest athlete in the world, and he, one of the biggest nerds in the world, are engaged to be married. The profile takes us from the time they first met, in May 2015, to now.
The profile includes gorgeous imagery of the expecting couple. Read the story in its entirety here.
