We’ve see her win gold medals at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro; shimmy on the 24th season of Dancing With the Stars, and recently the 4-foot-9 powerhouse caught our attention learning basketball tricks with the Harlem Globetrotters, which leaves many of us wondering, “What can’t 20-year-old Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles do?”
That’s hard to say, especially when the extremely disciplined gymnast is on a serious routine when training for the Olympics where she begins her first practice from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. She then goes home, eats lunch, does some quick rest recovery and heads to yet another training class from 3 to 6.
In her already busy schedule of being a serious gymnast, traveling as an icon, and living a normal millennial life, Simone made time to talk to me about her post-Olympic lifestyle, including her year off of training, her favorite food, and even her dating life.
Our phone conversation was initiated by an extremely upbeat Simone. Surprised by the sound of her extremely awake voice at 9 a.m., I chuckled, confessing that this interview was way earlier than most of my celebrity interviews.
Not one to waste time, we got right into it.
“So, what is the one food that you can’t resist even when training?” I ask.
“Peperoni pizza and frozen yogurts!” she responds immediately. A very different meal than her typical oatmeal in the morning, protein recovery shakes after working out, and chicken with veggies for dinner that Simone normally eats when training. “Now I can kind of eat whatever I want because I am not training and I have a year to take off, so why not?”
Seemingly excited, Simone is not only using her time off to eat the foods she wants, but she is also getting her mind and body together. “I’m not training yet, which works for me because I travel so much. I haven’t really worked out either, so I am letting my body and mind rest,” she confesses.
This amazing gymnast is quite the busy bee. Earlier this year, Simone competed on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars. Unfortunately, she was eliminated during the semi-finals but that definitely didn’t sour the star. “The experience I had was absolutely amazing. My partner was phenomenal, and all the contestants that were on the show seemed like they would be friends that you have for a while,” she expresses. She continues, “I wouldn’t trade that experience up for anything. I think that if someone was offered the opportunity to do the show, they should do it!”
As far as if the training was as hard as training for the Olympics, Simone confirmed it was about the same. “The training was similar because of the hours that we had to put in. You can’t pass on practice and just be like, ‘today I don’t wanna.’ [DWTS] is full hard training, up to six hours a day, so that’s about as much as I train for the Olympics.” And regarding the painful-looking split she did while practicing for the show that went viral and collected a few memes, she thought it was hilarious: “I thought it was OK because it showed imperfection.”
While others might have cracked under the pressure of being perfect, Simone smiling at her goofy moment in practice is why many are enthralled by her genuine nature. Speaking of attraction, although Simone in not dating right now and unbothered by it, she knows exactly what she wants in a man: “a gentleman with a nice personality, humor, and someone who knows how to have a good time.”
Although taking a much-needed break for extensive training, the 20-year-old is already planning for her 21st birthday. Where would a girl who traveled the world want to go? “Vegas!” Of course!
