The Pirelli calendar is a yearly celebration of the hottest models in a tradition dating back to 1964. Each annual publication has a theme that's used as a lens for imagery that corresponds to the 12 months of the year. The Pirelli calendar has a long history of displaying nudity, but this is sometimes toned down depending on the theme. The Cal, as it's affectionately referred to, has been inching toward more political themes in the past couple years. In 2016, in lieu of conventionally attractive models, Annie Leibovitz opted to shoot a calendar of "distinguished women," including Serena Williams, Fran Lebowitz, and Yoko Ono. This year's models are even more radical: Tim Walker shot an all-Black cast centered around an Alice in Wonderland theme. And the result is lit as hell.
Tim Walker flips the script of the notably white children's story. In his re-imagining of Wonderland, model Duckie Thot, Human Barbie Doll, stars as Alice, which is honestly a perfect choice. The all-Black, all-star cast also includes Naomi Campbell, Diddy, RuPaul, Lupita Nyong'o, Slick Woods, Sasha Lane, Thando Hopa, Whoopi Goldberg, Alpha Dia, King Owusu, Djimon Hounsou, Zoe Bedeaux, Adwoa Aboah, and from the looks of the behind-the-scenes video, Lil Yachty. Black Girl Magic and Black Boy Joy abound.
