This is clearly the season for Black Girl MAGIC. Highly anticipated fashion magazines are celebrating Black girls on their September covers, and we couldn’t be more excited. First, Rihanna and Beyoncé took our breath away with their Vogue covers, then Tiffany Haddish revealed her Glamour cover, Zendaya with her Marie Claire cover, and now Issa Rae looking like a goddess on the cover of Ebony.
The September issue is one of the most anticipated issues in the fashion industry and for eight Black women to grace their covers is not only special, but it’s monumental. The September issues are always a favorite, so it’s great to see women who look like us on the covers.
Like Beyoncé stated in her Vogue cover story: “If people in powerful positions continue to hire and cast only people who look like them, sound like them, come from the same neighborhoods they grew up in, they will never have a greater understanding of experiences different from their own. They will hire the same models, curate the same art, cast the same actors over and over again, and we will all lose.”
Rihanna and Beyoncé shut down the internet and made history with their covers, so this is just a reminder that Black women shouldn’t go unrecognized. Now let’s hope they keep this same energy for magazine issues to come.
