Imitation is the highest form of flattery, but acknowledging that someone has been an influence is the finest form of respect.
Naomi Campbell is the queen of the runway, no debate. Since the age of 15, the tall statuesque woman has been in countless shows. Now at 48, she is still serving up fashion and glamour on the runway. She is very much in high-demand, and her reign doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon.
It's not unusual to see an image of Naomi on the internet and be inspired by her past and present looks. That’s what a model is supposed to do, right?
Enter Kylie Jenner. When the young billionaire recently posted a picture of herself wearing a pair of crystal glasses and a choker, she was met with an image that Naomi posted of herself wearing the same glasses and choker when she was on the runway in 1995.
One could take it as petty of Naomi to share a photo of whom Kylie was obviously inspired by, or it can be seen as her giving a simple reminder that the supermodel did it first and influenced the look.
But Kylie wasn’t the only KarJenner to be influenced by the graceful model.
Kim Kardashian West has also been called out by “Mutha” when she was spotted on her Instagram wearing an all-leopard Alaïa ensemble. Obviously watching the beauty mogul’s Instagram, Naomi posted a flick of herself wearing the same designer in a similar look.
Kim was recently seen attending the wedding of Chance the Rapper wearing a beautiful multi-colored, satin, nightgown dress by Versace and a long, textured, high ponytail. Not letting anything get past her, Naomi’s image began to float around on the internet wearing the same dress on the runway with the same hair. Coincidence?
Kim looked great when she stepped out in this Alaïa cat suit during Paris Fashion Week, but many were disappointed because the beauty mogul failed to mention that Naomi modeled the exact look for Azzedine Alaïa back in 1991.
So, what is the real issue at hand? Have the sisters committed fashion crimes? Are they being honest as to where their fashion began?
The only fashionable crime that makes people raise a brow is whether the influential sisters can appreciate, acknowledge and accept that Naomi Campbell was an influence to their style and that she deserves that respect.
Let’s hope that in the future, homage is given and icons are honored for giving us something to aspire to.
