Today is National Nude Day, so let’s get to it.

Growing up, nudity wasn’t openly embraced in my house. Like, there are no photos of me as a baby splayed out naked on a bearskin rug or frolicking freely on the beach. In my house, if you were naked, it better be bath time or you had some explaining to do.

As a teen, I was just as awkward about it, quickly changing into my PJs, with my head down, at sleepovers to avoid someone catching a glimpse of my bare butt or, God forgive, a boob. There was a birthday party in 10th grade where I inadvertently flashed all my closest friends after my friend Nick swung me over his shoulders, completely oblivious to the fact that I was wearing a flimsy tube top. (Oh, ‘90s fashion.) Oh, the embarrassment.

I was probably about as uncomfortable about my body as any other young woman, but there was no clear reason why. Nudity wasn’t something that was shamed at home, it just wasn’t talked about, and we certainly didn’t go parading around nekked for laughs.

But then I grew up a little and went away to college, where I started indulging my hippie-dippy side: I went vegan for a few semesters, started practicing yoga, developed positive sexual experiences, and studied Eastern religion. Sure, it was cliché, but it gave me some space to really grow emotionally and allowed me to assess the root of my insecurities, starting with my body.

Now, at 29, I’ll admit that a lot of those insecurities are back with a vengeance. It’s way too easy to criticize myself on how my boobs don’t sit as high as they did at 22, or how my hips are a little fuller, and don’t even get me started on the extra bit of skin that hangs down from the back of my arms. So a few months ago, I started getting naked. Not for a man, but for myself. I started getting naked so I could really appreciate the soft folds of skin, the small of my back, the curvature of my knee caps. And when I do it, I love to put on music and just dance.

Sometimes I sit bare-butt on my couch and watch Netflix, and sometimes I’ll cook naked and barefoot in my kitchen. I sleep naked almost every night, and it feels fantastic.

There’s a rush you get with when you’re in the buff; it’s like you’re seeing yourself for the first time, everytime. So today, on National Nude Day, I implore you to try it. You don’t have to go as bold as me to relish that feeling. Maybe you start small by spending five minutes naked with the door closed in your room, maybe you take a little extra time to admire yourself after a shower. The point is, dare to be bare. When you do, you dare to be yourself and love yourself in every conceivable way.

And that is a beautiful thing.
