Queen Latifah knows a thing or two about traveling, whether it's living it up in NOLA on the set of Girl's Trip or setting sail on Carnival's newest cruise ship, Carnival Horizon, which she was officially named by godmother during NYC's Fleet Week.
So what does being dubbed godmother of a boat mean? An awesome ceremony that included yummy eats, tantalizing drinks and an epic Lip Sync battle with Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl champion Jake Elliott all aboard the new boat. Of course, the Queen took home the Lip Sync champ belt with a worthy rendition of "It's Raining Men" and after the show BET caught up with the star.
Here's what Queen Latifah spilled on her travel adventures and her Girl's Trip co-star Tiffany Haddish:
BET: What interested you take over as “godmother” of Carnival Cruises latest ship?
Queen Latifah: When Carnival approached me about being Godmother for the Horizon and about the partnership they have with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, it was an easy decision to make. Both organizations embody the qualities that are very important to me and put families first. And like me, Carnival Cruise Line is all about choosing fun – there’s something for everyone – and you can find anything you like to do on land aboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship.
B: With Memorial Day weekend coming up and folks STILL taking about Girl’s Trip, what's your ideal girls trip? Where would you go? Who would you take? What would you do?
QL: I like a vacation that is a mixture of adventure and relaxation. Relaxing is important for everyone, we all need to unplug and recharge- all of us. So a good bed, a comfy spot on the beach or by the pool is essential. But I’m also always down to try new things, see new places and have an adventure, so traveling to places I’ve never been to and doing things I have never done is always exciting to me. And at night, we have got to make sure there is a place we can turn up and get lit!!
B: What are your travel must-haves?
QL: Comfortable clothes for traveling. Always comfort. I want to be wearing things that are good for napping and chilling out. High quality sound is also a must. I need good headphones so I take my Bose with me on all trips. A carefully curated playlist. I always take music that is inspired by the place I’m traveling to. For example, when I’m on my way to Jamaica, you know I’m listening to reggae, when heading to Brazil there is some Bosa Nova and Samba ready to be blasted. And of course, there is always hip-hop like Drake, Jay-Z, Missy [Elliot]…always music that, to me, says party time. And I do take Nag Champa incense with me as well to make the space my own, get out all the energy from the past visitors.
B: What’s a fave vacation that’s you’ve gone on thus far?
QL: A trip I took to Cabo San Lucas with just me and my mom. This was the most perfect vacation ever with just the two of us as adults. We rented a jeep and drove down the coast and saw a lot of local art. My mom was an art teacher, so she had much appreciation for all the local art. We got a suite with two bedrooms and one night I will always remember was when we were each in our own room and both watching something, and I can hear that every time I would be hysterically laughing, so was she. I walked over to her room to see that we were both watching Napoleon Dynamite, and both found the exact same moments to be hysterical. It was a beautiful night and we watched the rest of the movie together. I will remember that vacation forever.
B: What can we expect from your upcoming Essence Fest performance?
QL: Big, big surprises are in store. We’re still planning but it’s going to be incredible. It’s been quite a few years since I’ve been to the Essence Festival so we’re going to make up for lost time and we are going to cover a lot. This is going to be big, stay tuned because I’m going to take you on a musical journey.
B: The rumors are swirling about Girls Trip 2, can you tell us anything? Would you be down for a part 2?
QL: I would do anything for and with that group of incredibly talented women. I don’t know what’s in store for Girls Trip 2 as of now, but I do know these women are ones I would work with again and again. We’re like a family.
B: Your GT costar Tiffany Haddish is the ULTIMATE story teller! Do you have any fun Tiffany stories?
QL: I’m trained not tell the stories :-) But it was really a good time shooting with Tiffany and the ladies. I rented a house down there and this was the chill spot on the weekends for everyone with a pool and a friend who was a chef that came in and cooked for us. For everyone with a pool and a friend who was a chef that came in and cooked for us.
[We played] lots of games and music. One day, Mary J. Blige came by (she was also there shooting Mudbound at the time), and Tiffany came over and was in the pool and from the pool yelled out, “Wow, you look like Mary J. Blige” and then kept going on with her story where halfway through realized it actually was Mary J. Blige and flipped out.
Tiffany could come by any given night. She had the most time and energy to see New Orleans. She would go to the comedy clubs and try new material. She’d go out to listen to live music. Just endless energy. And she found that old men loved her. So I have to say if you’re old and want to dance with Tiff, make sure you’re hydrated and have your meds cause she’s liable to take you down! These 70-year-old men were ready to pass out after dancing with Tiffany. I’m always late and she would come by and tell me these crazy stories. Tiffany always has a place in my home.
