Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison passed away yesterday (Aug. 5) at the age of 88. As a shining light of the culture, we will continue to celebrate her genius as a true originator and exemplifier of #BlackGirlMagic. Before we even had a word for that, Toni Morrison was proof that when we harness our inherent magic, it can have the most profound effect on people.
Her intelligence, poise, grace and talent radiated through her words and is the very reason I’m proud of being a Black woman. The Beloved author was unapologetic, bold and lived her life with intention.
“Being a black woman writer is not a shallow place but a rich place to write from. It doesn't limit my imagination; it expands it. It's richer than being a white male writer because I know more and I've experienced more.”
The mother, author, leader and outspoken angel reached a level of success that some may never reach, but she always believed in taking the next generation along with you.
"I tell my students, 'When you get these jobs that you have been so brilliantly trained for, just remember that your real job is that if you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else. This is not just a grab bag candy game."
Today we honor her. See all the reasons why we believe she was the epitome of #BlackGirlMagic throughout her life and fruitful career.
