Chrissy Teigen is on the cover of this month’s Cosmopolitan. Not surprising: She’s close-to-naked once again. Surprising: The Sports Illustrated swimsuit model admits that her fame was helped along by her famous husband. “I got so lucky that I met John, who propelled my career. I’m not delusional: that definitely helped," she told the mag.
Some might read that and think “you sound like a gold-digger.” But really, it’s refreshing and not at all gold-diggerish. Teigen works. And she works hard. But she also works more and has more fans and recognition because of John Legend. It’s something the rest of us have always thought, so it’s nice to hear that Teigen knows it. And no one needs another person pretending that their celebrity had nothing to do with partnering up with a superstar. Not only is that dishonest, it is boring and expected.
A short list of women guilty of this include: Amber Rose, Karrueche Tran and Kim Kardashian. Yes, Kim was Very Famous Kim before she was one half of Kimye, but she was never going to get a Vogue cover on her own. That took the influence of her I’m-so-fearless-even-Anna-Wintour-doesn’t-scare-me fiancé.
And it goes both ways. For every Chrissy Teigen, there is a Kevin Federline. Who was K-Fed before he was Britney’s boo? Just a backup dancer no one had ever heard of. He only got to transform into PopoZao after marrying the biggest pop star of the time. And though they have been divorced for years, K-Fed’s star has not fully faded, showing the long-lasting effects of a famous hookup.
Again, kudos to the K-Feds of the world. But more should be like Chrissy Teigen and give credit where credit is due. It not only takes the bite out of people’s catty comments about how they made it and why, but it’s a refreshing piece of honesty in an industry built on a lot of artifice and pretend.
