Commentary: Taking a Slut Walk with Amber Rose

The world’s sexiest mom is joining a growing movement.

Amber Rose’s fight back against the slut shaming that’s been thrown at her from ex-husband Wiz and ex-boyfriend Kanye have been watched by others from the privacy of their smartphones. A sexy Instagram, a suggestive tweet, Rose has used social media as her weapon for defending herself against their insults and putdowns. But she just announced that she’s about to bring the fight outside in the first Amber Rose Slut Walk, to take place this summer.

Slut Walks started in 2011 in Toronto after students were told at University of Toronto that in order to avoid sexual assault women should not “dress like sluts.” Clearly this 1950s way of victim blaming didn’t sit well with the student body, so they headed out into the streets in revealing clothing to symbolize that a woman’s appearance is not the reason for sexual violence. Since then, the grassroots movement has spread across the world and the message has expanded, too. Now Slut Walks are held to protest not just rape culture, but broader issues of misogyny and slut shaming.

Rose, who believes that her event will be a “liberating” experience for all women, posted this message online: My Slut Walk will be about every Woman Equality issue we deal with everyday u can walk and make signs for the issues ur passionate about. I’m in the beginning stages of putting this together but with ur help this could be an amazing liberating experience for us women. Stay tuned for more info in weeks to come. #AmberRosesSlutWalk [heart emoji]

Slut Walks aren’t without their controversy. Many, including some feminists, believe that it is the antithesis of female sexual liberation. Rose lately has also been embroiled in controversy. There was her Twitter war with Khloe Kardashian sparked by her saying Tyga should be ashamed of himself for dating barely legal Kylie Jenner. There was Kanye saying he had to take “30 showers” after they dated before any woman would believe he was clean enough to deal with him. There was Rose reminding him that his wife got famous off of a sex tape with Ray J. And now there is Wiz’s new verse from “For Everybody,” where he rhymes:

I fell in love with a stripper
Funny thing is I fell out of love quicker
They don’t pay attention to love anyway
They only concerned with what the haters say
Bottles be turning these girls into thots
Instagram turning these wives into hos

Classy. And more than enough reason for Rose to take it to the streets.
